Signing the Cross
Summary
Signing the Cross is a physical and visual expression of our faith in Christ.
Symbolism in Signing:
The three fingers (thumb, middle, pointer) signify the Trinity. The two fingers (pinky, ring) signify Christ unified human and divine natures. Touch head to signify blessing of our mind. Touch stomach to signify blessing of our internal feelings. Touch both shoulders to signify blessing of our bodily strength.
How to Sign the Cross
What to Say: We say "In the name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit."
What to Do: Form fingers together: Head -> Stomach -> Right Shoulder - > Left Shoulder
When to Sign
Beginning of prayer, during prayer, end of prayer. When we draw near to anything holy. (Entering the church) Any important moment in our life.
Careless Signing
Careless signing makes the demons glad, it is reduced to pointless waving of hands, and it expresses our lack of reverence towards God. This is a sin, called sacrilege[^1] (The irreverent, contemptuous, or injurious treatment of holy objects, places, or persons consecrated to God.).
