Seth

Oversimplified

  • The third son of Adam and Eve, given "in place of Abel," through whom the godly line leading to Noah and ultimately to Christ continues.
  • With his birth "people began to call upon the name of the LORD" — the line of worship set against the line of Cain.

His Story

Seth (Hebrew Shet, "appointed / set") is the third son of Adam and Eve, born after Abel's murder; Eve names him because "God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him" (Genesis 4.25). Through Seth the righteous line runs — his son Enosh, and after him Enoch and Noah — in contrast to the line of Cain. In his days "people began to call upon the name of the LORD" (Genesis 4.26). Seth lives 912 years and dies (Genesis 5.8), his descendants carrying the promise forward.

The Godly Line

The Fathers read the "sons of God" and "daughters of men" of Genesis 6 partly through the Sethite / Cainite contrast — a mingling of the faithful and unfaithful lines. Seth's descent culminates in the genealogy of Christ (Luke 3.38).[^1] See Adam, Noah, Typology in Scripture.
