Mysticism and Theology

Oversimplified

  • In Orthodoxy, theology and mysticism are not two things: true theology is knowledge born of communion with God, and true mystical experience is doctrinally sound.
  • "A theologian is one who prays truly, and one who prays truly is a theologian."[^1]

Summary

The Christian East refuses the modern split between "theology" (academic doctrine) and "mysticism" (private experience). As Vladimir Lossky put it, Eastern theology is mystical: dogma exists to guard and express the Church's real experience of God, and genuine experience never contradicts dogma.[^2]

Two hands of one knowing

The apophatic way (knowing God by unknowing, beyond every concept) and the cataphatic way (affirming what God has revealed) work together, culminating not in ideas but in union. The Trinity, the Incarnation, and the essence–energies distinction are simultaneously the highest doctrine and the ground of real communion. See Apophatic and Cataphatic Theology, Essence Energies, Spirituality.
