Meyer Commentary
At a Glance
Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer (1800–1873) was a German Protestant New Testament scholar. His Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament reached English readers in translation from 1873 to 1884.
What It Contains
Meyer gives sustained grammatical and historical exegesis, engaging scholarly alternatives and the Greek text. It is a significant witness to nineteenth-century German Protestant academic interpretation.
Orthodox Use and Caution
Meyer is valuable for identifying linguistic questions, but his framework is not Orthodox and belongs to a particular phase of Western academic criticism. Linguistic analysis does not by itself settle theological meaning. Read decisive conclusions alongside the Fathers and the Church’s liturgical reading of Scripture.
