Marvin Vincent Commentary

At a Glance

Marvin R. Vincent (1834–1922) was an American Presbyterian minister and scholar. His Word Studies in the New Testament (1887) focuses on Greek vocabulary and usage.

What It Contains

Vincent is a lexical reference work more than a complete theological commentary. It can help a reader identify terms, idioms, and word-level questions that merit further study.

Orthodox Use and Caution

Word studies are helpful servants but poor masters: a Greek word cannot be made to carry a doctrine detached from grammar, literary context, and the Church’s reading. Vincent’s Protestant scholarly setting should remain visible, especially where lexical claims are used to support broader theological conclusions.
