Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary
At a Glance
The Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871) was produced by Robert Jamieson, Andrew Robert Fausset, and David Brown, nineteenth-century Protestant ministers and scholars.
What It Contains
JFB offers concise verse-level explanation, grammatical observation, cross-references, and historical-Protestant theological judgments across the whole Bible. Its brevity makes it useful for orienting oneself quickly to an interpretive question.
Orthodox Use and Caution
It is a historic Protestant commentary, not an Orthodox doctrinal guide. Its treatment of sacraments, ecclesiology, Tradition, and disputed dogmatic questions may presuppose Reformed or evangelical conclusions. Read its observations as reference material and compare consequential claims with the Fathers and the Orthodox Church’s liturgical and conciliar witness.
