God
Oversimplified
- God is the one, uncreated, eternal, self-existing Being — the Source of all that exists, who depends on nothing and on whom all things depend.
- We know Him truly through His energies while His essence remains beyond all naming — hence both apophatic and cataphatic speech.
Summary
God is the one uncreated Being, the Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — one in essence and undivided. He is eternal, self-existing, outside time and space, personal, and the Source of all being. Because His essence infinitely exceeds the creature, we approach Him by two complementary paths: cataphatic speech affirms what Scripture reveals of Him, and apophatic speech unsays every concept lest we mistake the creature's categories for the Creator. What can be known and communed is His uncreated energies; His essence remains beyond participation. Cross-link The Trinity, Essence Energies, Apophatic and Cataphatic Theology.
What "In the beginning God created" reveals
The opening words of Genesis (Genesis 1) are not a bare report of a first event; the single line discloses who God is. That He creates "in the beginning" shows Him extra-temporal and eternal — He is before time, for time itself is created. That all things come to be from Him shows Him the self-existing Source of all being, dependent on nothing. That He stands over space as its Author shows Him beyond space. And the grammar — one God, willing and acting — shows Him one, personal, and an intellectual Essence, not a blind force. Cross-link Genesis 1, Apophatic and Cataphatic Theology.
"If God is complete in Himself, why create at all?"
Creation from fullness, not from need. God did not create because He lacked anything — a God who needed the world would not be God. He creates from the overflow of His own goodness. "God has need of nothing; but He, being an abyss of goodness, designed to give existence to things which did not exist."[^1] And the purpose is communion: "so that other beings, glorifying Him, might be participants of His goodness."[^2] Creation is therefore ordered from the start toward Theosis — not a transaction God required, but a gift by which creatures are drawn to share the life that God is.
