Ellicott Commentary
At a Glance
Charles John Ellicott (1819–1905) was an English Anglican bishop and biblical scholar. Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers is a nineteenth-century Anglican reference commentary.
What It Contains
Ellicott generally provides concise literary, grammatical, and historical notes aimed at an educated English reader. It can be a helpful orientation to conventional Victorian-era questions of exegesis.
Orthodox Use and Caution
The work is Anglican and historical-critical in period and setting. Its observations may be useful, but its theological judgments do not define Orthodox teaching. Give special scrutiny to conclusions that minimize patristic consensus or treat later Church dogma as external to the biblical text.
