Catena Aurea Commentary

At a Glance

Catena Aurea (“Golden Chain”) is a medieval anthology of earlier Christian comments on the four Gospels, compiled by St. Thomas Aquinas and translated into English by John Henry Newman. It is a doorway into many patristic voices rather than a single Father’s continuous commentary.

What It Contains

On a Gospel passage it places short extracts from Greek and Latin Fathers side by side. The value is chiefly comparative: it makes it easier to notice where Fathers converge, differ, or address a passage from different pastoral and doctrinal concerns.

Orthodox Use and Caution

Many cited Fathers belong to the undivided Church and are deeply useful. The collection, however, is a Latin Catholic compilation, selected and arranged by Aquinas; it is not an Orthodox catena, an ecumenical text, or a substitute for reading a Father in context. Attribution, translation, and the surrounding argument should be checked when a quotation carries doctrinal weight.
