Adam Clarke Commentary
At a Glance
Adam Clarke (c. 1762–1832) was a British Methodist preacher, theologian, and scholar. His Holy Bible with a Commentary and Critical Notes was published from 1810 to 1826.
What It Contains
Clarke brings linguistic notes, textual observations, antiquarian material, and practical interpretation. His long-form notes can be useful as a record of early nineteenth-century Methodist biblical scholarship.
Orthodox Use and Caution
Clarke’s Methodist and Protestant assumptions shape his doctrinal conclusions. His philological suggestions may be investigated, but neither they nor his theological judgments should be treated as a replacement for the Orthodox inheritance. Particular care is needed wherever he addresses grace, sacraments, the saints, or Church authority.
